Anyone have any news on Shohei Ohtani?
I know the International players under the age of 25 are capped at $10 million. What I don't understand is the thought he would be missing out on hundreds of millions if he came to the states. Do Japanese players really make that much? He would only have two years where he would be capped by MLB, right?
I also don't understand why some teams have more international money than others. Is it because they haven't spent it yet? Or is this based on other factors?
The Dodgers and the Cubs have the most to spend. The Pirates have the 4th most to spend.
Ohtani has said he is coming and money isn't an issue. I don't know when the sweepstakes start.

That's what I don't get. Why does he get to pick what team he plays for? If that is the case, why do the Yankees with $3.5 million to spend and the Pirates at $2.2 million matter?
Google isn't helping.

Sammy, thanks for playing Google for Dog. Hope he can use inane sense of a dog to figure out the answer to his original question.

now I would say that if the Pirates were ever to make a push for a "Big Name" it'd probably be him, just don't know what we have to offer that the other teams don't. ;

Sorry Possum for starting a baseball conversation about one of the top free agents in baseball.

There is no longer any more fees to the team that currently has his rights? He is allowed to get up to $10 million a year based on his age, but no team can pay that? How much do teams start with for International players?
I did read that website prior to my first post, but thank you.

Yeah, from what I gather the "Cap" is due to the MLB's rules for spending on INT players below a certain age. But the posting fee rules to the Japanese team have expired?
Honestly if this is all the case, if I were him I'd maybe even wait until a new agreement is reached or he reaches the age where he'll get regular FA money.
