Glasnow Question
How does a guy with his stuff have a 8.2 swing and miss % in his 2017 stint with the major league club ? I watched all his starts and time and time again , he would get ahead 0-2 or 1-2 and batters would would off 4-5 pitches in what would end up a 10-11 pitch walk. I do realize he also just had stints where he walked 2 batters on 8-9 pitches but the point is where are the swings and misses ? 8.2 is lower that that of guys like Mike Leake .
Glasnow Question
One reason would be his some of his pitches were so exaggeratedly out of the strike zone that hitters were quickly able to decide to lay off his pitches. Part of his development must be making it difficult for hitters to decide whether to swing and enticing them to offer at tough pitches.

I'm not sure if that ratio is effected by batters not swinging at pitches . I thought it was calculated by the amount of misses divided by the swings .. but I could be wrong. I tried to look it up but can't find anything definitive.

No, I am sure you are correct. One of the frustrations with Glasnow last year was how he would crumble when he got ahead in the count 0-2 or 1-2. Instead of pitching aggressively on the edges or just beyond, he would throw pitches neck-high, ankle-low, or two feet outside. These would be counts where the hitter has to protect and make split decisions to swing at close pitches. Instead Glasnow made it easy on them. Then it seemed he would either go ahead and walk the hitter or throw one right down the middle. Major leaguers don't miss those pitches
He took "waste pitches" to an extreme. Hopefully he can transfer his success and confidence from Indy to the majors this year. He had neither of those in Pitt last year.

I'm not sure I'm correct either but from my view something was crazy with his swing and miss ratio. It was almost like the hitter knew when a curve ball was coming and fouled it off. Then you watch another pitcher throw a similar pitch in a similar count and the batter misses it by a foot. You are correct about a lot of those "waste pitches" as you described them.

I rarely recall Glasnow being 0-2 or 1-2. Are you sure you're remembering correctly? Glasnow was perpetually behind and missing spots both inside and far outside the zone.

Glasnow Question
What is the average swing and miss rate?
I thought Glasnow was so wild, he was never in the zone. He has some nasty stuff, but if he isn't throwing it for strikes, no one will swing in the majors.
My theory, which could be way off, is that in the minors he dominates because he is a top prospect and hitters want to show him up, get that hit off of him. In the majors, players already made it. They will wait for him to pitch to them.

Glasnow Question
It would be interesting to see his scatter charts between NL and MiLB. Looked real quick and didn't really find much. That could say if he's all over the place when he comes up or if minor leagues just can't judge as well
Glasnow Question
I know if he doesn't shape up and at least show some promise at the major league level this year he may be a Glas-never.

I can't find that stat. I do know that his at 8.2 was terrible. Again .. I'm not sure of this but I do think the swing and miss ratio is calculated on pitched that the batter swings on.
