What's particularly sad is that this decline was not by chance. It was orchestrated by the owner who decided after 2015 that winning was nice but not worth the money it cost to remain competitive. Payroll went down each year after that. Sure, Kang and Marte effected this season but they only won 78 games with them last year. Each off season since the 98-win year of 2015 has been underwhelming. They aren't even trying to build a competitive roster.
