Per John Perrotto:
Nick Burdi will miss the remainder of the season after having vascular surgery Tuesday in St. Louis.
Burdi, a rookie reliever, had surgery aimed at relieving symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. Burdi had been on the injured list since April 23 because of nerve irritation in his right elbow and forearm.
Burdi is expected to be fully recovered by the time spring training begins in February.

Burdi has surgery.
Burdi needs like 34 more days on the 25 man roster before the Bucs can option him to the minors. It would appear if he is healthy next season, he will begin the season on the MLB roster. My guess is that the Bucs don’t want to offer him back to the Twins since he is a Rule 5 player which the Pirates actually traded for from the Phillies.

He actually looked pretty good when he was pitching early in the season. Unless he has a tough time recovering, I would expect them to keep him on the team beyond the minimum number of days needed.

Yes, I don't think that's a problem. He'll probably begin the season on the IL and doing a rehab in AAA anyway. But that doesn't count as optioning him to the minors. As long as he's ready to pitch there'a a spot for him on the major league roster.
