So crazy to see the Pirates at just about the bottom, especially when they were known as a club that found hitters all through the sixties and seventies

Before free Agency. Hitters cost money.

Spahn is one of the most amazing athletes ever to play the game. He won 20 or more games in 13 of 17 seasons between 1947 and 1963. In the other 4 years of that span, he wo 14, 15, 17 and 18. He won the Cy Young award at age 36 and was 2nd in the voting at ages 37, 39 and 40. He managed to win 363 games despite losing 3 years to military service in WWII. He was a combat engineers and received a shrapnel wound in the foot trying to repair a bridge at Remagen under fire. He received a battlefield commission to lieutenant.

He had 35 career HRs. He had at least 1 HR every year for 17 straight years from 1948 thru 1964. He hit 9 of them after age 40.

Spahn pitched for the Braves in the first game I ever saw at Forbes Field. The Bucs beat him 7-3 behind a CG by Harvey Haddix. Bob Skinner had 4 hits. Bob Uecker PH for Spahn and struck out.

glad you got to see him pitch. I remember him playing but I don't think I even saw him on television. I remember listening to games in 1966 season and from then on (not that I remember details) and can remember Prince and the Possum (Jim Woods) talking about Pagialroni, Maz, Clemente, Stargell, Mota, Clendenon, Jerry Lynch and Bob Bailey. At one time I asked my Dad if my first grade teacher was Jerry Lynch's mom (since she was Mrs. Lynch).

Will Clark hit a HR in his first AB in A, AA, AAA, and MLB (off of Nolan Ryan). He hit the first home run at The Ballpark in Arlington, his first as a Ranger. He hit a HR in his first AB as a Cardinal.

I got to meet Warren Spahn sometime around 1980, long after he retired. He wasn’t a big man physically, which took me by surprise. He treated me like I was the only guy on earth. He told me stories I’m sad to say I’ve forgotten and took as much time to talk with me as I wanted. He was a very nice man.
