Re: 2024 Off-Season Thread
The Pirates have acquired Enmanuel Valdez from the Red Sox for pitcher Joe Vodgatsky. Never heard of this pitcher for the Pirates. I guess the Pirates drafted him just this past July. The roster is now at 37 players. When they officially sign Elvis Alvarado it will be 38 on the roster. If they sign Cutch that will bring the roster to 39. Not a lot of room to add a corner outfielder, and bullpen help. I still don’t understand why all the middle fielders? I hope they don’t think Valdéz can fill in the corner outfield position.

another player who even if he plays well is mediocre.
Re: 2024 Off-Season Thread
Looks to me like the Pirates gave up nothing much to acquire nothing much at an already crowded position.

Re: 2024 Off-Season Thread
I wonder if the Pirates have something on the burner to trade an infielder rather than a pitcher. Besides the infielders on the roster they signed one or two infielders to minor league contracts. I wonder if there is a team inquiring about Nick Gonzales, or Hayes or Triolo. Why stockpile all these infielders?
Re: 2024 Off-Season Thread
So far other than Horwitz, just organizational filler. Pirates lot of middle infield utility guts has all the looks of trade bait for relief help. Just a bunch of players to do GIGO with other organizations. Surprised we got someone with MLB experience. I see Bae and Alika Williams days being numbered.
Now, where is our outfielder? Or are they doing the "going with what we have" approach? Have to start looking at options, that's usually a tell tale sign. They painted themselves in a corner with Contreras last year.

At this point I am glad some of the free agent mid range outfielders have not signed elsewhere. I just hope the Pirates have been in contact with their agents, and have made proposals. If they wait too long they will be scrapping the barrel for a corner outfielder. Since the Winter Meetings I have been checking regularly to see if there’s Pirate news on the signing or acquisition of an outfielder.Surgnbuck wrote: ↑Sun Dec 15, 2024 8:43 pm So far other than Horwitz, just organizational filler. Just looking at some of the players who are available outfield free agents, and I was surprised to see that Randal Grichuk played in Toronto in 2018 and 2019. Our current GM was working in Toronto both of those years. I wonder if Grichuk is on the Bucs radar?

I still can’t believe that Williams is still on the roster. He is a good defender, but he can’t hit. With a team with several good hitters, he would fit in well, but for the Pirates they need someone with a better bat.Wildwoodcoach wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 12:48 pmI can't wait to watch Valdez and Alika Williams battle it out for

He’s on the roster because the Pirates aren’t trying to win. I don’t know how anyone can come to any other conclusion.fjk090852-7 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 9:36 pmI still can’t believe that Williams is still on the roster.
