GMBC must have something on BOB. Any idea what it might be?fjk090852-7 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 4:54 pmI cannot understand why the Pirates would even think about trading their #2 or #3 starting pitchers. Pitching is so expensive and they know what Keller is due for several years, and Jones is not yet arbitration eligible. Who knows if Chandler or Harrington are going to be good MLB pitchers? Yes they have had success in the minors, but will that translate into the Majors? In my opinion now is the time to sign a free agent outfielder, and some bullpen help, and get prepared for ST. Don’t think the team has enough starting pitchers, and begin moving them for a position player when several position players are still available at salaries not exceeding Pirates parameters through free agency.Doc wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 2:11 pmI find it not at all surprising that Keller would come up in this conversation for two reasons: he seems to be unable to be consistent throughout an entire season and because of the money he's due. I'm a bit surprised that Jones is mentioned, though, what with him being young and controllable. I wonder if the Pirates think he's an injury risk going forward because of how hard he throws?

Cherington seems to always want to be in rebuilding mode. And that's where they will firmly be if they trade several starting pitchers. It almost sounds like Cherington is fighting against the idea that they could compete if they just add a few key players. So if he dismantles the rotation, the strength of the team, they have an excuse for not contending while they rebuild the starting pitching.fjk090852-7 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 4:54 pmI cannot understand why the Pirates would even think about trading their #2 or #3 starting pitchers. There's no basement in the Alamo.

When a team's in a rebuilding mode, there's neither pressure to win nor an expensive payroll. There couldn't be a more perfect scenario for this organization.Bobster wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:15 pmCherington seems to always want to be in rebuilding mode. Re: 2024 Off-Season Thread
I kind of wonder if all the discussion about trading starting pitchers came about during the Winter Meetings as the Pirates discussed trades with other teams. Possibly Boston approached them about Jones, and nothing materialized, or some team asked about Keller and nothing happened. Then the Pirates and Cleveland began discussing a trade and the Horwitz deal came together. Since Ortiz has been moved, end of trade discussions involving starting pitchers. I as a fan would love to know how trade discussions go, but I guess we just have to guess what goes on when team representatives meet, or call to discuss trades.Doc wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:29 pmWhen a team's in a rebuilding mode, there's neither pressure to win nor an expensive payroll. I still don't get the reasoning behind the Horwitz trade. They won't be a playoff team with or without him during his time here. Why give up a LHP like Kennedy (who they gave $1 million to) and throw more in on top of that? Must've been feeling pressure from somewhere.

It would be fun to listen in to the conversations between GMs, but we all know they'll never reveal what they say. They want us to imagine they're all pretty smart.fjk090852-7 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:45 pmI kind of wonder if all the discussion about trading starting pitchers came about during the Winter Meetings as the Pirates discussed trades with other teams. I don't pretend to understand most of what's done when trades are made. I just know that people trade because they believe they'll benefit by doing so. Most GMs believe that "benefitting" means that their team improves. Since 2015, I'm not sure what "benefitting" means to the Pirates.3pirates3 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 8:26 pmI still don't get the reasoning behind the Horwitz trade. Second go around for Ramos. I don't even remember Tanner Anderson, who the Pirates traded to the A's to get this guy. Tanner Anderson is no longer in baseball, btw.
Ramos has an article in September as a guy to keep an eye on in the minors while was with the Mets. I guess he wasn't worth watching for after all.
