Sad to hear. He’s one of those players from my youth who had what I thought was a cool name. He and Jim Maloney were the anchors of the Reds rotation in the early ‘60s when it seemed every team had a good pair of pitchers.

Rico Carty has passed away at age 85. He was really good, but injuries robbed him of his opportunities. He had an outstanding rookie season, and then who can forget, for those of us old enough, the “Write-in Rico” campaign to get him into the All Star Game starting line-up a few years later.

Carty missed the whole 1968 season with tuberculosis. Missed the whole 1971 season with a knee injury. He had enough left in the tank to hit over .300 for Cleveland in his mid-30s, 1974-77.

A really good hitter for a long time in the big leagues. His time with the Braves came to an controversial end after an in-flight altercation with Henry Aaron.
