1960 Revisited - July 29
By Bobster

July 29, 1960---The Pirates (57-37) shut out the slumping Cubs 4-0 at Wrigley Field to take a 3-game lead over Milwaukee. The Cubs (33-60) had now lost 14 of 17 games since the All-Star break. Vinegar Bend Mizell retired the first 17 Cubs he faced before Cubs pitcher Jim Brewer broke up the perfect game with a single in the 6th inning. Richie Ashburn followed Brewer’s single by drawing a walk, but both runners were stranded. Ashburn also singled and was thrown out by Clemente attempting to stretch the hit into a double in the 9th.

It was Clemente’s 12th assist. No other Cub reached base as Mizell faced only 2 batters over the minimum and finished with a complete game, 2-hit shutout. Mizell raised his record as a Pirate to 6-2. He struck out 5. Brewer (0-3) had retired the first 14 Pirates of the game until Hal Smith doubled in the 5th and Don Hoak followed by driving a pitch into the left field bleachers for his 9th HR of the year. Leading 2-0 in the 7th, the Pirates chased Brewer with consecutive singles by Stuart, Cimoli, Smith and Hoak. Smith and Hoak each drove in a run to give Mizell a 4-0 lead. Stuart (.245), Smith (.300) and Hoak (.262) each had 2 hits in the game. Hoak drove in 3 of the 4 Pirate runs.
