1960 Revisited - July 25
By Bobster

July 25, 1960---The Pirates opened a three game series in St.Louis. The Bucs were in a virtual tie with the Braves for first place and 4 games ahead of the Cardinals, who came into the series at 49-41 and tied with the Dodgers for 3rd place. The series was a chance for the Cardinals to make headway in the pennant race. But the Pirates moved back into first place by themselves with a ˝ game lead over the Braves with a 4-2 win over the Cardinals while the Braves were idle.

A Stan Musial HR (#9) off Bob Friend had given St.L. a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, but Bill Virdon tied it 1-1 in the 6th with his 5th HR of the season against starter Larry Jackson. The Pirates (54-37) took a 2-1 lead in the 7th when Bill Mazeroski singled home Rocky Nelson, who had singled and moved to second on Clemente’s sacrifice. But the Cardinals tied it 2-2 in the bottom of the 7th on a PH single by George Crowe. Bob Skinner’s 12th HR gave the Bucs a 3-2 lead in the 8th against Cardinal reliever Ron Kline (3-8), and Clemente hit HR #7 in the 9th off Kline to close out the scoring at 4-2. Friend (11-6) went 8 2/3 to get the win. Face came on for the final out and picked up save #14. Virdon (.273) and Clemente (.319) each had a pair of hits. Rookie Julian Javier, who was traded to the Cardinals 2 months earlier for Mizell, was 1-for-4 and made 2 errors for St. Louis.

Starting lineup:

Virdon CF
Groat SS
Skinner LF
Nelson 1B
Clemente RF
Burgess C
Hoak 3B
Mazeroski 2B
Friend P

The loss dropped the Cardinals (49-42) into 5th place behind the Dodgers (48-40), who moved into 4th place.
