Clarity replaces Obscurity: Mark Redman’s Contract 6-29-05

By Stephen Zielinski

Everybody has wondered about Mark. Now we know.

Dejan Kovacevic has provided us with the final word on this vexing problem. You can find it in the Pirates Notebook for June 29, 2005:

Littlefield revealed that the Pirates’ team option for 2006 on pitcher Mark Redman’s contract is mutual. This is how it works: Redman has a player option for $4.5 million he can exercise to guarantee that salary. The Pirates have a team option for $4.95 million, but Redman must agree to it. If he does not, he can declare himself a free agent. “It’s an unusual contract for the business,” Littlefield said. “It really is up to Mark, either way.” The Pirates would prefer to keep Redman.

How Littlefield handles this one should prove interesting!
