The Pirates are about to unveil the worst starting rotation in franchise history.

I'm not sure any of our starting pitchers could even be the No. 5 starter on a good team.

No matter how good (or bad) the offense is, even if it overachieves, it will never be able to put up enough runs to offset what our starting pitchers are going to allow.

Our offensive might be average. Our defense might be average. But our starting pitching will doom this team to something like 54-108.

I can't believe a team is willing to enter a 162-game season with this kind of pitching. Well, yes I can, because it's the Pirates.

Their worst team ERA was in 1890, 5.97.

Last season was the 6th worst in franchise history, 5.08.

I'd predict they'll have a better ERA than last season, but with the DH, it's apples and oranges.

I think they are going to be way better than you predict, but as they say, that's why they play the games. I certainly hope they don't lose 108. What fun is that?

How "way"?

It's going to be ugly, Surg.  The question is- how ugly?

Our saving grace is- we won't have any saving grace.  :(

Makes me long for the good old days.  Kip Wells.  Kris Benson...

I think their staff ERA is going to be higher than last seasons because of the DH, but not by much. Which would be way better than 5.97 if I'm correct. I believe they will probably be around the 5.20 mark this season

I'm too lazy to see how that 18-something ERA compared to the other teams of that year.  Seeing as how that was Dead Ball, it had to be bad.

I agree with you on the DH effect.  I think we'll be a little higher than what you think- maybe 5.25 or so.  Could be less if we give up unearned runs.  Of course,, that would be problematic, too.

Yesterday was Guy Hecker's 166th birthday. He had a rough year in Pittsbugh in 1890:

RHP: 119.2 IP; 2-9, 5.11;

1B: 340 AB; 0-38-.226

Manager: 23-113-2

And, the GM went around talking about 1893.
