the first seven years are for league minimum and year 8 is for $65 million. He won't be around by then:-)

They've done it before, jus not as often as most would like. IIRC most people were excited about Polanco, then Marte and Cutch.

But seriously, I wonder if this could signal a change in their operating methods. I hope it sends a message to other Pirates that they too could stay and don't have to automatically be moved after a few years to avoid being paid.



Nutting's history denies him the right to be trusted. So I still fear this might be a PR move to satisfy an angry fan base and could be the only such move they make while continuing business as usual moving forward. They could even trade Hayes before they have to pay too much of that contract. But I hope that's not the case. I hope it signals a willingness to begin operating the franchise like a real MLB team.
