Just read in the PG that Shelton meets with Jim Leyland

once a month to talk baseball. Have to give Shelton credit

for reaching out to someone who has been quite successful

I admire people who are in positions of authority but who understand they don’t know everything and are willing to keep learning from those who have more experience and expertise. Good for Shelton that he’s meeting with Leyland to do so. I hope it pays off.

Please let him have decent players to work with!!

From what I've seen so far this season he seems to understand the abilities his players have. More then once I've said with a shocked expression, "did the Pirates just do that". Very enjoyable thus far.

I'd much rather see Shelton handling discipline behind closed doors than Oscar Marmol alienating his players by doing it publicly.

It's easier to get away with that when you're winning.

Lose, and it won't help you to keep a job or get another.

I don't like how Paul Zeise made it seem like he got the extension based on the hot start. Simply nothing more than a desire to keep continuity. I like how he has given longer leashes to his starters. I like the way he uses the bullpen with what he has to work with. He seems to have the players all in with how the team is run. We have all wanted to see how he manages given some more talent. I still feel the bullpen and the offense are going to do them in, but we'll get to see how he and the team reacts to a bad stretch.

So far, this opening month has been a lot of fun. It wouldn't have been too far-fetched to think the club's record could be the reverse of what it is currently.

We all know they'll be bad stretches ahead because every team has them. We'll likely see more of them and they'll likely last longer because the Bucs talent isn't among baseball's best. But right now, I don't care. They've brought joy for now and hope for the future.

Personally, I'm not expecting them to reach the World Series, to win the division, or even make the playoffs. But after 20+ games, I can see they're going to play hard and improve and, to me, that's what I'd hoped for during this year because my expectations for them to be legitimately competitive are set on 2024.

I think we can all agree that so far we've seen progress over what transpired the past three seasons. Realistically, it was going to take that long to tear down an organization that had little to begin with and then rebuild it, especially with a risk-averse owner like Bob Nutting. There will still be heartache and frustration, but it looks much better for the future on April 25, 2023 than it did one year ago.

I agree with you on that. Zeise writes some good articles. This wasn't one of them

Well stated, doc. Last year I said good times were on the horizon. The horizon is getting closer
