Sadly, yes I do.

There are many players and personnel to blame for this recent 7 game losing streak, and one of these days the Pirates will win a few games and the streak will be forgotten, but I think at season’s end Shelton will take the fall for not winning this season. The Pirates will say it is time to bring a different voice to guide the team. During the five years as manager Shelton has not had the best players to work with, but if the Pirates fall short of a winning season they will make a change with their manager.

It's not strictly about the W-L record. Shelton isn't to blame for the unwillingness of Nutting and Cherington to improve the roster. But on a game-by-game basis, we are constantly scratching our heads at the illogical decisions Shelton makes: the lineups, the pitching decisions, the in-game strategy (or lack thereof). And the consistently poor fundaments his players demonstrate. If Shelton is replaced it won't be for "taking the fall." It will be for his own gross incompetence. And I don't think you'll see any other organization rushing to name him their manager. IMHO, he's a guy who knows the game inside and out but can't manage players and put them in the best position to win on any given night. He's best suited as a coach where he doesn't have to make decisions to run the team. His roster is not strong but he has cost that roster several games with his own incompetence.

It seems inevitable that Shelton will get fired after this season, since at this time it appears the Pirates record will be worse than their record last season. Two names I think they could hire as manager would be Terry Francona if he decides to come out of retirement, or current bench coach Don Kelly. I sure wish there was a young Jim Leyland out there. Fundamentals must be stressed from whomever becomes the manager next season.

A new manager depends on whether Cherington is still the GM. If he's willing to fire Shelton (that's not even a sure thing), he won't hire Francona. Francona is an experienced, independent thinker. Cherington has a lot of say regarding game management: who is unavailable, who should start, maybe even the batting order. I can't see Cherington telling Francona how to manage a game. And Cherington would know that. He wouldn't give up control to Francona that he has enjoyed with Shelton. Don Kelly is more likely. He would be grateful for the job--just like Shelton--and do as he is told. Therefore, Cherington needs to go too. We'll never get a good manager as long as Cherington is the GM.

I hear what you are saying about Cherington, but I cannot see him losing his job. There are a number of coordinators, assistants, as well as scouting personnel that are under Cherington. A new GM will want to bring in his own staff on board. Sure some of the staff would remain, but probably some of the group would go. I just fear we would have the beginnings of another several year plan by the new regime.
