Seeing as how we have a thread dedicated to FO Complaints, why not add one for another popular, multiple-times-per-game topic of interest? :)

My .02, I'll go along with some unfavorable opines, but I defer just because I listen to our opponent's announcers more often. Why? Because I like to hear outside opinions....and, I don't like Brown's PBP.

I DO like Brown's analysis quite a bit.

I had to listen to Myron Cope for half my life, I don't have to put up with annoying voices anymore. Some have mush mouth.

I find Block to be pleasant. Voice alone, I'd rate him with many from other teams.

Frankly, I tune out a lot. I listen to the calls. The idle chatter never gets far into my ears. That's one advantage of growing up in a large family.

The guy who hired Myron at WTAE told him, "We think we see a trend toward annoying voices."

I've always thought Greg Brown was very good in describing the PBP. His only drawback IMO was his obsession with nicknames and catch phrases. He's got a nice HR call with "Cannonball coming!" but still tries to tailor HR calls to the player's name, which seems unnecessary, like he's trying to show us how clever he can be. But over the years that has often been annoying. "Mack, whack, tallywhack" for Rob Mackowiak was cringe worthy. It often seems like Brown is just trying too hard.

And in the past few years, Brown has changed. He now seems to want to be the star of the show. The camera is frequently on him throughout the game as he tries to do funny bits with his analyst, Walk in particular. He talks about what goes on in the booth and other people he and the analyst know. He appears starstruck with the newer analysts, Walker, Young and Capps and is often asking them to explain even fairly routine plays. And he's always asking them about their own careers when they should be focused on the action on the field. Brown seems to think his job is to keep us entertained with humor, stories and the stories of his partners, more so than describing the game being played. When I watch the broadcasts of other teams, I don't see much of that behavior. The camera is rarely on those in the booth, the comments are primarily about the game being played and the analysts talk less about themselves and more about the game they're watching.

A lot of this has to do with whoever is producing the broadcast. I don't think Brown is calling the shots so someone is directing the camera to be on him so often while he does his bits with Walk or whoever.

Re: Brown

I guess it goes back to the old saying, "first impressions don't mean everything, but they do mean a lot."

I remember the first time I listened to the guy after living elsewhere for a long time. I came back to visit, only to "luck out" and get him on the dial.

Some Pirate who was so good that I can't remember who he was....did something so "ordinary" that I can't remember what he did.

The team was Double Gawd Awful at the time (which year is hard to tell. There's been so many.)

So, Brown had to make it sound like "The Pirates Won The Pennant! The Pirates Won The Pennant!"

I have no problem with getting excited....I'm OK with complimenting a team, but I think he goes (pardon the pun) overboard.

But, when he gives his analysis of a player or the team as a whole, I find him to be quite insightful and he doesn't sugar coat things as much as I expected him to. I could listen to his take on things all day long.

Yoi, and double Yoi! How great it was to be named a Cope-a-nut!

Myron and I had something in common. Back in the day we both shopped for dress clothing at the same store on 5th where PPG Paints Area main entrance is. It was called Larry Rubin's Specialty Clothing for men of all sizes. Not only did we use the same store but we both used the same salesman. I had several instances where Myron was in the store at the same time I was. I have to say Myron was really a nice man.

Remarkable writer.

Wish someone did the reading for him.

I swear one time, the guy cracked my glasses. And, I was wearing them. :)

Painful in so many ways.

The "best" parts can't overcome the rest. That's how painful it was. Never do that to me again. ;)
