I wasn't sure where else to put this. Cherrington was on the MLB channel this morning (and repeated this afternoon) where he said Davis will work at catcher this off-season and come to camp to look at that role. He mentioned what a hard worker he is. HJe also noted the team is looking to add an outfielder this offseason. At least they are thinking of things, regardless of whether they can find deals that work.

The Pirates payroll and improvement dictate that they should no longer be dumpster diving. We don’t need any more 1 year stopgaps trying to prove themselves again. I am hoping that they sign a quality SP. I would love to see LHP Eduardo Rodriguez added. The payroll supposedly is around $35M at present. I don’t understand the need for another OF unless it is McCutchen. I would be ok with a Santana reunion at IB as long as they platoon Triolo with him

"Another nugget from the morning -- the Pirates are monitoring the market around Jack Flaherty and are interested in bringing him in on a short term deal should he be unable to find a longer commitment." - Jones

Instead of “monitoring” the market around Jack Flaherty, the strategy with regard to free agents ought to be jumping into the market aggressively and participating like they’re wearing big boy pants.

I agree with you, if they sign an outfielder is McCutchen no longer being considered ? Possibly they may be thinking they will play, Triolo, Joe and Endy when not catching at first base rather than bringing someone on board.

While this article does not mention the Bucs status as far as TV goes, I know it is a bit up in the air. Obviously some teams are really having to look closer at their budgets with the threat of less ad revenue looming. I don't think that affects us from a dump POV (and boy do we know what those look like) but I do think it is affecting us in looking for FAs. Probably why anything you read about our approach is mentioning trades - a cheaper way to deal with your assets and maybe get something from say the Padres, Indians, or Rangers who are all mentioned. We will probably end up grabbing FA Ps from the dustbin when all the smoke settles - Flaherty looking for multiple years but will take a 1-year cheapo deal from the Pirates to resurrect his career if nothing pans out being a prime example.

Pirates acquiring Marco Gonzales from Braves for a player to be named later. Braves also sending cash to the Pirates.

Gonzo is going to make 12.275 million this season. It is going to be interesting to see who the Pirates send back and when.
Only pitched 50 innings last season, none after May 28 when the Mariners beat the Bucs, he pitched well but got a no decision.

The Mariners picked up some of Gonzales salary when they traded him to Atlanta. Supposedly Atlanta is picking up some of the salary with this trade. Not certain what the Bucs salary obligation will be. I also read the Pirates will send a player to be named or cash back to Atlanta. In my opinion the acquisition is a good risk for the Pirates.
