Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are still in on a couple of the Rays' starters.

The Pirates appear to be focused on lefty Matt Moore, but they are also looking at Jake Odorizzi as a backup option. Multiple teams have looked to the the Rays for a potential rotation upgrade, but the Dodgers could now be out of the running after landing Rich Hill as part of a trade with the Athletics. Moore, 27, owns a 4.08 ERA and 109/40 K/BB ratio over 130 innings this season. He posted a 2.41 ERA in Jul

On the other hand: http://bbbaseballtalk.weebly.com/home/8 ... ion-update lists both Moore and Odorizzi as 'unlikely' to be moved and the only teams 'in the mix' for them are the Dodgers and Giants.

In any event there's only an hour left before the trade deadline so we'll see what happens.

Sounding like the Pirates and the Giants are interested in Moore . I think it would make more sense for the Giants to make that move as they are in a far more contending position than the Pirates. I'm hoping we don't outbid them as it's going to take a really good prospect to land Moore.

Another deadline where Huntington talked a good game acting like he was going to make all these moves, but when it comes down to it the Pirates are going to do nothing. Let's keep playing Jaso at 1st base when he is hitting .186 in his last 30 games instead of calling up Bell, and let's insert both Locke and Vogelsong back into the rotation as well in the middle of trying to get a wildcard spot. This team is right back where they were in the offseason looking for starting pitching and still can't fill the void.

I still blame Nutting for not giving Huntington the financial resources to go out and sign a few good quality starting pitchers. You gotta be able to do better then Locke, Vogelsong, Niese and Nicasio after coming off a 98 win season. Sorry fellas but it's just not good enough you gotta be able to do better then this.

"The Pirates want starting help. The Rays want Josh Bell and/or Austin Meadows, per source. Pirates so far have shot down those offers."

I don't get the connection of not dealing for a starting pitcher to not calling up Josh Bell.

We have Vogelsong,Locke, and Niese that can fill voids in our rotation. And we have Jaso who is head and shoulders better then Josh Bell. We don't need any help.

Hopefully if that's what it would really take , they continue to hold off.

Well according to SOME around we "aren't trying to win" because we didn't trade Starling Marte for a rental three years ago, so we'll see

I don't get the connection of not dealing for a starting pitcher to not calling up Josh Bell. There really is no connection. It's ridiculous that Jaso is still on this roster and a guy like Josh Bell can't get called up but a guy like Max Moroff can.
