he still has a chance to make playoffs. Maybe the plan to get him in playoffs is going to work after all.

You are right.

He can't play in playoffs but he can get playoff money.

If it means the Cubs not making the playoffs then I'm all for this series of moves.

Phillies receive AA infielder Eliezer Alvarez from the Cards according to https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/09/ ... inals.html.

per the article: "Alvarez entered the season ranked 10th on Baseball America’s list of the Cardinals’ top 30 prospects. He currently ranks 19th among St. Louis farmhands in the eyes of Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com."

The Pirates of course obtain Financial Flexibility.

Does this mean it was the Cardinals blocking him and not offering anything in return to the Pirates?

Yes it was the cards, the logic serves they were offering more than the Phillies got..

They blocked him from Milwaukee,  who desperately needed pen help.   The Cubs never had anything to do with it.  It never would have gotten past the brewers.

That's how you can tell the initial waiver was revoked Aug 3 or so.   The cards had dibs over the Brewers at the time.

NH had given up on the season but couldn't trade nicasio to STL while we were ahead of them in the standings.

Then instead of just keeping him, he outrighted him later in the month after the cards pulled ahead of 2 AL wildcard competitors. And blew smoke about how he wanted him to go to an AL contender.

He knew he wasn't getting there.  But the goal was to save the $ even as early as August 3rd.   He just couldn't dump him to the cards without making the org look even worse than it does now.
