Didn't the Padres make a seven year offer too? I don't know how much, but it was reported to be the highest offer in San Diego Padres history.

They offered 7/140. The Royals offer is 7/147.

An interesting look at each team's highest paid player.

I had a lot of fun the first few years of Neal's work. There was a discernable plan, I thought it was reasonable, and it brought some real measure of success.

But there last few years, remind me of Littlefield.

Cool list. A better question is how many players would you want at that price? I counted 13 for me.

That Votto deal doesn't look that bad with a 5 war....it's the length that might bite them.

I don't think anything can be gleamed from a bidding war between the Padres and Royals.

That's about right. 27 years old. Signed through 34. About 20 per at a 3.5 WAR.

I disagree. baseball is unfair if the league is divided approximately in half between bigger mkts and smaller mkts. But its hopeless if there are actually three divisions: bigger mkts, smaller mkts, and Pitt/Tampa/Oak.

Reviewing the article above shows teams in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Phoenix, Denver, KC, St L, Twins, Baltimore, San Deigo, even Brewers are all willing to take on bigger contracts than the Pirates will even consider. (note - some of the ## in the article are misleading as some of the compensation is often deferred. But the money is still being paid over time.

The funny thing is, I don't like many of those contracts. But it;s also true that the doom and gloom that was promised when the contracts were signed have largely been wrong. I don't see any evidence that the contracts are hurting any of those organizations.
