Braves signed C Chris Stewart to a one-year, $575,000 contract.

Stewart got a major league deal, but he'll likely be stationed at Triple-A Gwinnett if Tyler Flowers and Kurt Suzuki make it through spring training without any physical issues. Stewart, 35, batted just .183/.241/.221 in 144 plate appearances last year with the Pirates. He owns a .230/.298/.293 career slash line.

Good luck to him. He wasn't a great player but it is easy to root for him to do well.

I think he would make a good coach or manager down the road. If he goes to AAA he can work with the young players as well as catch a few games each week.

His bat was better than it got credit for the first few years.

The last few not so much.

Still, I thought he retired but good to see him giving it a shot.

When the Bucs acquired him, his career BA was .214 and in the season in which he played the most he had batted .214 in 162 ABs. But his first 2 seasons as a Pirate he hit an uncharacteristic .294 and .289. But I used to chuckle at his hits as he was the luckiest bad hitter I ever saw. In those 2 seasons he had 73 singles and 13 2Bs. He rarely hit a ball hard. His singles were largely seeing eye dribblers thru the infield or soft pokes just over the infield. But it happened so often it was interesting to see such a prolonged streak of good luck. But it didn't last as his next 2 seasons were back to normal at .214 and .183. But it was fun while it lasted.

Bobster, I totally agree. He then would point to his head like he meant to do that. His only HR was fun to watch him and his teammates celebrate.

Not sure what you're saying. Stewart was an adequate backup. No one expected him to hit but it was fun seeing those dinks and doinks. I don't think people had a problem with him other than he was 35 and blocking Diaz. Stewart had no future with the team and Cervelli's injuries should have opened the door more for Diaz but Hurdle seemed to want to use Stewart while Diaz sat. At least until September anyway.

No, it's just that I always saw people slam him for not being a good hitter. But you know, duh, he's a backup catcher. I didn't want him to start every day either, but people wanted him immediately cut.

He had to be one of the worst players in all of baseball the last two years, right?
