Could Tyler Glasnow be the new Andrew Miller?

I remember seeing Miller pitch in the Cape Cod League two years in a row, when he was in college. One time, he faced Brad Lincoln and it was a pickem' as to who was better. Miller was taller. Miller had a tough time becoming a starter and thus began a very productive career as a relief pitcher. Better to be a starter, but a multi-inning reliever can be a good gig.

Miller wasn't moved to the Bullpen until he was in his 7th Season. He started for five seasons (after his 10 innings as a rookie, rookie) and didn't do very well at all. He was the big name in the trade to Florida due to being drafted high in the first round.

Miller found his role, but it took some time. I would see if Glasnow fails as a starter before I project him solely as a Relief Pitcher. Glasnow might be destined as a reliever down the road.

With that said, is the direction for the bullpen in the future changing? Miller did change that relief pitcher role with his performances over the last few years. It might be harder to find a Miller than a stud starter.

(That 2006 Draft was so good for Pitchers. Of course, the Pirates missed out on Kershaw, Scherzer, and Lincecum.)

I think Glasnow will be a starter at some point this season.

Dude should have been broken in as a reliever, but Pirates were being greedy with service time I think and didn't want to waste service time.

I'd be ok with him (Glasnow) coming in 6th inning and finishing the game. I really get tired of this Russian Roulette with relief pitchers. I know it doesn't fit Hurdles cookie cutter routine late inning scheme but if a relief pitcher is mowing people down leave him in and continue mowing batters down.

Every team does that, not just Hurdle.

The problem is that guys aren't geared up to do that anymore. Some guys are stretched out, but most are only trained to go one strong inning. They are sprinters, not marathon runners. Totally different training schedule to get the results.

If what they're doing with Glasnow is working (it's early, I'm not saying it IS working just yet), then why on Earth would you change it right now?

His role is meant to expand. With each measure of success, his role should obtain additional expectation.

Glasnow can be held up as a classic case of mismanaging a prospect's MLB promotion. I'm of the mindset that NH didn't want to waste Glasnow service time on relief, and now they are in the position of just trying to get something out of this freak pitching prospect.

Keller is like the anti-Glasnow prospect, I hope from these two that they learn how to manage prospects differently. I also hope that they see sometimes maximizing service time and development has to be balanced.

Was Glasnow mismanaged or is it just taking him time to figure some things out? He started in spring training and was throwing strikes. Is the move to the bullpen responsible for him throwing better or was it an adjustment they made this spring? I don't know. I am not disputing that service time may have played a part of his development but from what I have read the adjustments seem mechanical and not related to just moving to the pen.

I don't think it was service time either. He was a dominant starter in the minors. If you look at his minor league work, he was due the call up to be a starter.

I think the team dictates what roles players are put in. Last year, they were looking for starters. They tried Glasnow first. He was awful. They sent him down and he was dominant again.

Taillon and Kuhl never pitched out the bullpen. Were they misused too? Brault was used in the bullpen once in 2016, then went there in 2017 seven games compared to his four starts.

Hopefully, this works for Glasnow. He has been bad as a major leaguer so far, but dominant in the minors. He is still young. I don't feel he was rushed, he just had no other place to go. He was always a starter, so they started him.

Wait, I thought I remembered reading that the Pirates were really stupid and cheap because they didn't promote him even sooner?
