The Pirates have to stop this platooning in the outfield. Dickerson, Marte, and Meadows should all be playing each and every day. They're all young, and also are the most productive. People, this is baseball we're talking about. In their prime, did Bay, Giles, Bonds, VanSlyke, Bonilla, plus many of the other very good and productive players sit. The answer is no. When you replace any of the three with Sean R. and George Polanco, you not only weaken the defense, but also the lineup.

Yea I agree Hurdle needs to stop playing Sean Rodriguez everyday somewhere period. He is having a terrible year at the plate and you don’t need to sit a guy like Dickerson or Marte every other day so that Sean Rod can play. This team has now lost 9 of 11 games are are only 2 games over .500 at this point in the season you can’t continue to not play your best guys everyday. And right now like you said the best 3 right now are Dickerson,Marte, and Meadows.

The conventional wisdom would be to play your best players. But Clint Hurdle thinks he's smarter than everyone else. While other teams are putting their best on the field, Clint had the most well rested 75 win team last year. And they could stay home and get additional rest instead of having to play any of those nasty old post season games. Clint is a genius!

Hurdle hasn't been playing the bench that much this year. Unlike previous years. I don't think a platoon is happening with Rodriguez and Dickerson.

Totally agree with this. As long as Marte, Dickerson and Meadows are healthy, they should basically play every day. I'd say Dickerson gets 1 day off a week, and Marte and Meadows 1 day off every 10 days.

Trying to work S-Rod and a non-hitting Polanco into the OF on a regular basis is just ridiculous when the other 3 are going so good.

Interesting. Dickerson was just rested a few days ago. What is your explanation for SRod getting that start in the OF over a rested Dickerson?

I assume because Rodriguez has faced Lester before with some success. The next two series have all righties in their rotations (Cardinals, all righties, then Dodgers, with all their lefties on the DL). Only Bell has played more games than Dickerson so far this year.

I really don't know, just assumptions for Hurdle's reasoning. Was he asked that question before or after the game?

Do you think there is a platoon?

I was thinking the same thing so I looked it up before the game. Rodriguez was 12 for 50 (.240) lifetime vs Lester. But that includes 3 2Bs and 3 HRs so maybe that was it. It also includes a ton of Ks (now 20 in 53 ABs).

I think it's clear from NH comments and our recent lineups that there's a committee outfield now.  A hard platoon, of course not.   That's not the question being asked in this thread.   The general question is why are the best players involved in an OF rotation now?

It wasn't like Rodriguez was platooning before Meadows arrived. I can see Polanco getting some starts with Marte, Dickerson, and Meadows getting the majority. That's what I thought Huntington meant by his committee comment. (Actually, I didn't hear Huntington's comments, I heard Hurdle's on the issue)

It just seemed like a match up to get Rodriguez in there with a bunch of righties coming up in the next ten games.
