I think a lot of "right thinking" fans (meaning, fans who think like me haha) have fought the notions all year that this team is good when we're hot or bad when we're in a bad spot like now.

One analyst agrees.  Fun article:

One way in which the Pirates have been exceptional, however, is in their lack of exceptionality. In addition to their .500-ish record, they’ve scored almost exactly as many runs (576) as they’ve allowed (577), at per-game rates that are almost exactly average on each side of the ball, in a manner — as measured by their on-base and slugging percentages for and against — that is almost exactly average. The Bucs are unspectacular right down to the core, and that makes them, statistically, the world’s most middle-of-the-road baseball team — not just of this season, but in all of modern history (since 1901).

thanks for posting. This is one of the things about baseball, teams get on hot streaks and look like they are great and then they go on cold spells. The really bad teams don't have many hot streaks, the good teams don't have many bad streaks.

yeah we could totally continue this streak and end bad, or turn back up before it's over.  I think either has a pretty equal chance of happening.

It's important to remember though that you're never as good as you think you are or as bad as you think you are.

But yeah, it would feel different if the team were consistently mediocre from week to week and month to month. Swingiest team I can remember.

True, but the teams they were being compared to also had cold and hot streaks. That's just part of sports. It's how it all shakes out at the end that counts.
