The rule of thumb seems to be that if one part doesn't break down another will. That's been their story this year. The chances of it all clicking at one time are apparently remote.

It appears that the Pirates were already using almost anyone in AAA with any talent as part of this year's pen. Doesn't appear to be any real depth among the other parts in AAA with the possible exceptions of Kingham and maybe the Never Man (doubtful) and Burdi (if he comes back from surgery).

Holmes, Anderson, and the rest do not appear to be major league pitchers, even mop-up relievers.

In the first game of this series, Hurdle used his veteran lineup and played it straight with the BP until using Neverauskas in the 8th trailing by 1. That move was suspect but otherwise Hurdle was generally credited with giving it his best shot to beat St.L since that game mattered to other teams in the WC chase. Then last night Hurdle did the exact opposite, starting Newman and Kramer and letting a close game get out of hand with his most suspect September call up BP arms.

Hurdle's decisions, as always, are head scratchers. Was he playing it straight for the benefit of other teams in the WC chase or not? One day he did, one day he didn't. Was the first game merely a token attempt to play it straight with no plan to continue to do so? Was he merely resting Mercer, Harrison and the BP last night while following a formula for rest he has used all year even if it means punting on a significant game? At this point of a lost season, I'm ok with playing the young guys. I just don't see why Monday's game was different.
