What if Scenario...Addison Russell and Jonathan Schoop

If the Flubs and Brewers non tender Russell and Schoop, should the Pirates go after both?

We know about the baggage Russell carries regarding his domestic violence past.  And Schoop had a bad year in 2018, but came off an All Star 2017 and is only 27.

I go after Schoop personally and plug him into 2b and let the chips fall where they may.

Russell on the other hand, not sure I would because of the off field issues, but the Bucs employ Kang and he is no saint.  Domestic violence though is kind of a deal breaker for me.

Although an infield of Kang/Russell/Schoop/Bell is much better than we currently have that is for sure.

What do you all think?

I doubt the Cubs will non-tender Russell. Schoop would be worth looking into.

Stay away from Russell no matter what. Chances are he is going to get some sort of suspension and be on a very short leash.

Schoop would be a good pick up if he was cheap. I don't think the Bucs should try and out bid anyone for him.

He made 8.5 million last season and I think that is too much for the risk involved. His lifetime OBP is just 294.

I pass on Schoop. Even with hitting 21 HR's his OPS was only .682. I would rather allow Frazier to play everyday and see what he can do.

As Buc fans I know we are really disappointed with Kang. But outside of fitting nicely into the South Korean drinking culture (see below), what has he done to earn the label of a bad guy? Obviously Kang has (hopefully had) a problem with drinking, but he has paid dearly for it. When it comes to alcohol, he was not raised with the American sensibilities that are part of our collective disgust.

I think it's time to let him move forward. If he can restore himself to his prior playing level you have to admire his determination and the redemptive story that we are watching.

As a part time Orioles fan, I've followed Schoop. He struggled as a rookie in 2014 but came on strong 2015-2017 culminating with 32 HRs, 105 RBIs and a slash line of .293/.338/.503/.841 in 2017. He's also a good fielder with a great arm who can play 2B or SS. I don't know why he was so bad last season. Of course the entire Oriole team stunk so maybe the losing was getting to him but he hit even worse when he went to Milwaukee. Nevertheless, he was an impact player prior to 1 bad season in 2018 and there's no reason to believe that at age 27, he'll never again show the abilities he demonstrated before last season. I can't imagine he would want to play for the Pirates after being with the noncompetitive Orioles. If the Brewers nontender him it will be because he's due arbitration next season after making 8.5 million and is a free agent in 2020. If he's nontendered he'll get a contract well beyond what the Pirates could pay.

But his last offense wasn't his first DUI, it was his third. That's not a mistake, it's a pattern. In addition, he left the scene of the accident and only the road barriers kept him from T boning the car in the other lane, possibly killing the driver.

I hope he's figured it out, but I also hope he uses Uber.

Wasn't Kang also involved in a sexual assault case in Chicago? I know nothing came of it, as far as him being arrested or brought up on charges. However, as a player this is not the publicity you want.

Schoop is worth a very close look. Especially if he can play SS!
