Rob Biertemple in his notes commented that Diaz is still down to an undisclosed virus and there is a chance he will begin the season on the Injured Reserved List. If that would happen, Stallings would make the team out of ST.

That sucks.

Hopefully Diaz will only miss a couple weeks into the season. If most teams rosters are set , maybe the Bucs can then sneak Stallings through waivers in mid April. Since the Pirates are weak on catching depth I think they would like to retain Stallings if it is possible.

Although it's not a virus, it might be malaria, which is caused by a parasite, and is spread by the bite of the anopheles mosquito. I remember Clemente had it about 1964 or 65, and was out for quite a while. It is fairly common in Latin America.

I remember when Clemente came to camp with malaria. You are correct it was either 1964 or 1965. He missed some time, but I think he ended up having a good season. I just checked in both those seasons he lead the league in hitting. He was The Great One!

Could be Hepatitis A or Mononucleosis both would keep him down for weeks and sap his strength.

I heard he got West Nile at Pirate City because Nutting was too cheap to use mosquito spray this year.
