1. Kevin Newman (R) SS

2. Bryan Reynolds (S) CF

3. Melky Cabrera (S) RF

4. Josh Bell (S) 1B

5. Jose Osuna (R) 3B

6. Pablo Reyes (R) LF

7. Adam Frazier (L) 2B

8. Elias Diaz (R) C

9. Steven Brault (L) P

Cubs throw the ball around like Little Leaguers in the top of the first and Bucs take advantage for a quick 4-0 lead. Brault counters by serving up 3 HRs in the bottom of the 1st as Bucs trail 5-4. Brault gives up 5 hits, 1 BB, 3 HRs, 5 runs on 35 pitches in 1st. But Hurdle already said Vazquez, Kela, Rodriguez and I think also Liriano are all unavailable. This is what happens when you have a 1 inning per pitcher rule and have to use about 5 relievers per game. So instead of using half as many relievers per game, the same guys have to pitch everyday and then soon become unavailable. So Brault will have to tough it out. At least he got a hit.

Ouch.

Brault may develop into a serviceable starter, but somehow Huntington is going to convince himself that he can be a one or two option next season.

did not expect this from Brault. I thought he had turned a corner with his streak of good starts.

He needs to be lightly pencilled in for next year's staff.

Brault leaves in the 3rd after giving up 5 HRs. Sadly, it's not the first time a Pirate pitcher gave up 5 HRs in a game. Archer also did it. The GS followed a 2-out 4-pitch walk to Lester. McRae enters after the bases clearing HR and promptly walks the first 3 batters he sees. Pirates have now walked 6 Cubs and the 3rd inning isn't even over yet.

And Huntington expects those two to be key pieces in the rotation next year.

I have zero doubt NH thinks Brault is an answer in the rotation.

I think the Cubs will score at least 20 vs this cadre of JV relievers today. Maybe 25.

What the hell happened. We were a hit away from Newman from being 10-9, or a homer from being 10-10 not too long ago when I turned it off. LOL.
