Any word yet on what the deal is? It would be nice if there were extra money for free agents.

Pirates Announce New TV Deal

I will include all 162 games on AT&T Sportsnet or major national tv. I doubt there will be any National TV games for the woeful Bucs. Also included are all ST home games.

Financial terms and the length of the pact weren’t released publicly.

It won't be announced. That will make it easier for Nutting to pocket the lion's share without fans knowing.

Actually, I was thinking it would be more because it shows it can't compete with competitors' deals.

ok. but we can't forget the forest for the trees.

the Dodgers have 1 billion dollar plus deal.

It doesn't matter who owns the Pirates if this is the way it is.

So the Pirates should just not try right? The Dodgers have more money than us so we just cobble together the cheapest product available? ::)

Yes, teams can compete without being among the biggest spenders. The Pirates promised to build a consistently competitive team. But once they became competitive, all they wanted to do was slash payroll. Always maintaining a bottom 5 MLB payroll will never make a consistently competitive team. Once in a blue moon, you might get lucky. But that's no model for success. Nutting has never even been willing to have an average MLB payroll. If you won't compete for players with teams willing to spend just an average amount, there's not much hope.

I don't agree with that. Look at the division. With the exception of the Cubs, they are all pretty comparable in market size. So, their TV deals are probably comparable. And yet

Cardinals $174 million payroll sixth in the league

Brewers $128 16th

Reds $128 17th

Pirates $73 29th

One of these things is not like the others. Since 2011, the Pirates have only been in the top twenty in payroll once. And have never spent more than $100 million. (Both 2016.)

I'm not saying that throwing money at the team is the solution, but I do believe they have more in the way of financial resources than they would like the fans to believe.
