Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Bucs are considering Ben Cherington as a candidate to head the baseball operations.

So, with Nutting having to pay Hurdle and NH and then that freight on him, that means the payroll will go down to make up for the money spent.

It should go down this year. No Vazquez. Marte should be traded. No Cervelli. Bell is Arb 1 and should be traded when his value is highest. Anyone and everyone on this team should be traded. They've treaded water for four years, kind of, and kicked this can down the road. Time to tear the whole thing down and start over. I hope they win less than 60 games and have a payroll half of this year's because they are going with a roster full of 0-3 players.

It will, but there are some good options out there that could fall into Pittsburgh's price range. There is no excuse that the payroll goes down more with all this circus. If it does, unless its a total gut job rebuild, its all a joke.

I don't think you just tear it all down for the sake of tearing it all down. Tearing it all down does nothing unless there is a plan. Otherwise it's just a case of starting from zero and hoping for better results. They've got a few players on the roster and a few prospects in the system to build around. They are desperately thin on pitching and need to acquire some young arms or do a better job of developing those they already control. Maybe trading Bell and Marte could bring some much needed pitching into the organization. But the new regime has to be willing to spend enough to supplement the roster with a few useful players instead of merely doing a better job of communicating to us why they won't.

As much as I love JB, his defense is atrocious. Hope our 'new' regime puts a premium on pitching and defense. I think we can flip JB to the American league for a pitcher or two. I like Mike Minor in particular.

Also I wouldn't be surprised (or upset) if any new regime would want to do a full inventory/analysis of the system themselves before trading everyone away.  I couldn't imagine that would be quick. Not by the beginning of the season anyhow, considering nobody even works there yet.

I would wonder what trade value JB has. Each year, it seems, half a dozen power hitting first base/ DH types languish on the market before signing for some low sum. I'm not sure why someone would trade a lot to get one more.

I hope that the new GM waits to see what a new manager and coaching staff does with our existing talent before blowing the team up.

Bring in a lefty starter, a lefty reliever, a catcher, a right fielder. We have some reasonably valuable pieces that could pry away some young, blocked talent, like a Reese McGuire who's backing up Danny Jansen in Toronto. Rich Rodriguez, Mike Feliz, Jose Osuna, Will Craig and Kevin Kramer come to mind as potential trade pieces.

There are veteran FA lefty starters and relievers that shouldn't break the bank, and by complimenting our right handers, help their results as well. A decent outfielder shouldn't be hard to find. Even MLB Trade Rumors thinks we'll sign one!

I do understand those here who want to trade everyone of high value and make a clean start. I just want to wait for the new regime to have a fighting chance with the team we've got first.
