ESPN has a listing of each mlb team's best and worst signing for the decade. It listed the signing that paid the most also. So, the Pirates paid Liriano the most and that made sense and was a good signing. The best signing was listed as Russell Martin at two years for around $17m. I agree, that turned out great. What is deflating was that Clint Barmes at 2 years for about $10-11m was the worst. I suppose it is kind of bad that they didn't have any huge misses but that also means they took very few swings.

Off the top of my head, I'd say Bedard was a worse signing, but again not much money.

I didn't think Clint Barmes deal was that bad.

I don't think it was a lot of money but Aki Iwamura signing was pretty bad

edit--oh wow, that was not this decade . . .

And it was a trade not a FA signing.

Other than that though it was an inspired choice

Paying Rod Barajas anything might qualify as the worst deal.

Actually, now that I think about it, signing Operation Shutdown was so bad that it has a half life of at least three decades and still should be listed as the worst signing of the decade.

But it gave us the best sports line in Pittsburgh history. Mark Madden's "Derek Bell is the ultimate Pirate. He lives on a boat and steals money."

I actually thought at the time, that Bedard signing was going to be a good one.

Well yeah, it was a good thought. With all of the bad deals we've endured for decades, things are bound to get a bit jumbled with regard to their genesis. :)
