1960 WS game fact

Post by Lecom »

Saw this in my emails today from MLB talking about one weird fact for each team.

Pirates

Were it not for Bing Crosby's superstition, there would be no full-game video for Bill Mazeroski's home run that won the 1960 World Series.

Bing Crosby -- a part-owner of the Bucs -- believed that he was a jinx to the team. So, he flew to Paris with his wife and listened to World Series Game 7 on the radio. But he thought ahead and hired a company to film the game off his television. This recording was found in a wine cellar in 2010, and it is the only complete copy of the game in existence.

I read about that tape being found back then. To the best of my knowledge, it has not been reproduced for sale, or viewing.

if it has, I would love to see it.

Thank you! I will let my wife know when she asks what I want for Fathers Day. She'll be thrilled to get me out of her hair for a couple hours.

It's a 2-disc set with the game on 1 disc. Interviews, the WS highlight film, a 1960 season highlight film and newsreel accounts on the other disc. It's in B & W. And they didn't have replay back then. But now we can do our own replay with the disc. I still can't watch it without getting choked up on the Nelson, Smith and Maz HRs.

Best game ever! Seriously! 7th game of WS, lead changes hands back and forth, some great defense (mostly by Hoak), freak play (bad hop to Kubek), timely hits, Mantle's great baserunning gamble to keep NY alive in the 9th, and the drama of the late inning Smith and Maz HRs. All of that action in a 7th and final game IMHO makes it the best game ever.

While we are looking back to the greatest game in Pirates history I want to thank you Bobster for the link to the DVD on Amazon. I just ordered it.

I also highly recommend Bobster's book about the great 1960's season. I have it and have read it and someday will be sure to have Bobster autograph it. Heck, I need to get your mailing address (by PM) and I will send it to you to do just that.

Another fact from this game. Can you tell me who made the last put-out of the game? The answer is unbelievable but it was Maz on a 6-4 force out from Groat.
