I loved how the Pirates tortured Zambrano seemingly every time he pitched. It didn't take much for him to go off the rails.

And I was always amazed, on those hot muggy nights when Veale pitched, how he'd whip out that blanket-sized handkerchief from his back pocket to wipe the sweat from his face. With how fast he threw, and how wild he could be, imagine being a hitter watching that, from that huge man, from the batter's box.

He had those big, thick glasses, too.

Oh, right, I forgot about those.  I remember being terrified by him cleaning the fog from them on those steamy nights, and I was sitting all the way out in the left field bleachers!

Nelson Liriano (1964, Puerto Plata, DR): 1995-96; INF; 476 AB; 8-68-.277

I stopped following baseball for a while after they cancelled the 1994 World Series. I didn't realize that I ignored it so completely that I didn't know till now that Liriano had played two full seasons with the Pirates.

Tony Pena (1957, Monte Cristi, DR): 1980-87; C; 2,872 AB; 63-340-.286

Larry Demery (1953, Bakersfield, CA): 1974-77; RHP; 445.1 IP; 29-23, 3.72

Bob Klinger (1908, Allentown, MO): 1938-43; RHP; 990.2 IP; 62-58, 3.74

George Yeager (1873, Cincinnati, OH): 1901; C; 91 AB; 0-10-.264

Larry Demery was known as "The Bullfrog," for good reason.

Demery was among many players who saved the season in 1974. He came up in early June and stabilized the fifth spot in the rotation for about two months, finishing the season 6-6. The team went 8-7 in Demery's starts, which took on some importance since they clinched on the last day of the season.

Best player born on June 4: Darin Erstad (1974) or Tony Pena (1957)

6/4/1940: The Pirates beat Boston, 7-2, in the Pirates' first night game at Forbes Field.

6/4/1953: Ralph Kiner and three others traded to the Cubs for six players and cash

Today's Birthdays - June

Post by INbuc »

I hate to hijack a great thread, but I wouldn't want the day to pass without recognizing a couple special Pirate birthday boys:

Bill Virdon 1931, and

the best player born on June 9

Dave Parker 1951.
