Free Agency - 2021

MLB Trade Rumors has posted their annual article regarding free agency and projecting where the top 50 free agents will end up and for what cost.

Many have noted that salaries and overall spending will be greatly reduced in 2021 because of lost revenues from the pandemic. In looking at their salary projections, this clearly appears to be the case. Only a handful of players are projected to receive contracts for 3 or more years, and many are projected to receive 1 year offers in the range of $6 mil.

I know that the Pirates are loath to spending, and, I want the focus to be on acquiring more talent for the long-term, but ---

if Archer really can be brought back for $4 mil for a 1 year commitment, or a reliever land Hand can be landed for 2 years at $14 mil, the Bucs may want to consider these type of options.

Acquiring Hand would better allow the Bucs to try and trade Rodriguez now, and if Hand is successful, trade him in June for additional talent. Similarly, re-acquiring Archer would allow the team to trade one or two of its middling starters now for talent, and again, if Archer rebounds to pitching like a #4 starter, then ship him off in June/July for other talent. One year and two-year deals have limited risk.

Continuing, I also was disappointed to read that the Pirates were considering a multi-year extension for Bell. Bell has had all of 2+ months of good hitting over his career and has not adapted well to 1st base. The announcers get way too excited when he makes an okay throw to 2nd on a 3-6-3 double play attempt, rather than his more typical toss into the outfield.

BC needs to be bold in trying to reshape this team. A free agent signing or two at reasonable costs may allow him multiple avenues to move forward on this path.

Lastly, good to see the team move on from the Never-Man. And, taking a shot with Burdi was a good move, but they also made the right decision to let him go now that injuries have continued to plague his career.

As much as I want the Pirates to add talent as soon as possible, I don't expect BC to sign any free agents of consequence, unless it's for the sole purpose of trading those players at the Deadline, as you suggested. BC is going to build the team from within and, if and when those home grown players are close to competing for a title, he'll dip his toes in the free agent market.

Nutting isn't likely to give him money in these next few years when the team isn't going to be competitive. Hell, he's probably not going to give him any when the team is competitive. Maybe the club can hold bake sales and garage sales in the meantime and save up those pennies for when it's time to spend.

I know 2020 was a weird year, one in which every team lost money. However, if there is a year in which the Pirates can make some sort of impression in free agency its this one. I don't think Nutting will do a single thing and that includes reinvest the 10+ million in which he saves by dumping Archer.

That said, absent a few - make that very free free agents, everyone will be taking a discount. Many will fall in the Pirates wheelhouse if the 10th richest owner wants to reinvest that Archer ,money and add 2-5 million on the cheapest payroll in the league.

I wouldn't mind seeing something offered to Jackie Bradley Jr. Pick one starter between Mike Minor, Jose Quintana, DeSclafani, Kluber, Happ (Maybe as the new AJB), Foltynewicz. Some of these guys just had down 2020 or injured 2020, but have had recent good to solid years. Relievers - Hand probably is a pipe dream, but his cost won't be 10 million. I know bad teams don't need a closer, but he comes and then you trade him at the TDL for assets. Same with all of these guys if they have success. Is Melancon an option to return? Alex Colome? Jeffress? Darren O'Day, I know is 38, but a heck of a set up guy that won't cost alot and could bring something at the TDL. A guy I have my eyes on is Brad Peacock, who can start or relieve. He was injured in 2020, but has had success. I'm not certain how much run Osuna would have, the former Houston closer. I'm sure Pittsburgh stays away with the Kang situation (off field stuff).

Bottom line, if you want to build the farm quicker, sign two or three of these guys and then if they have success, trade them for assets and you save a percentage of that contract they signed with the potential trade.

I agree, there is no reason for the Bucs not to have some sort of urgency to build a winner quickly.

I forgot to mention, the guys I mentioned above are mostly one year deals in hopes you can trade them at the TDL for assets. I feel the staff needs a veteran to really lead them. That is why I mentioned Happ, a guy who has had success and can help them. (this doesn't mean an Aaron Harang type of sign). AJB helped the younger guys on the staff. We miss that. Same with a Brad Hand or a Darren O'Day type. I don't want to necessarily see a multi-year deal with any of them.
