It has been rumored since the July trading deadline that the Pirates could move Joe Musgrove. There are good reasons for a trade, since he is controlled through arbitration for two seasons. He also would probably bring back a couple top prospects.

A reason not to move him would be to keep him in the rotation which probably includes a healthy Taillon, Keller, Brault, and maybe Kuhl or Brubaker. It would appear that the other teams in the Central Division maybe a little weaker due to players leaving through free agency which may benefit the Pirates in the next couple years. I guess at this time I am on the fence as to whether the Bucs should consider trading Musgrove.

No.

Obviously, the offer will be Suspects. Suspects do us no good. Contued punting gets us nowhere. It gets BOB somewhere.

Depends upon the return. If we get a major league ballplayer in return, I would be OK with it, but if we just get more suspects, I would pass and keep him.

There needs to be a plan to move this team forward towards being competitive. Clearly, they will not compete in 2021. Musgrove is a FA in 2023. Like it or not, we all know the Pirates don't retain their free agents. So unless Musgrove can be seen as part of a rotation that gets the Pirates into the post season in 2021 or 2022, there is no reason not to trade him if the return will be of value.

BC needs to look at his roster and minor leagues and determine a realistic goal to compete. Player moves should be geared to that goal. Players who will be gone by then might as well be traded if they can bring players with control up to and beyond whatever that goal is determined to be. On the current roster, no one other than Hayes, Reynolds, Keller or Brubaker is likely to be around and productive for more than a few more years.

based on Marte deal I think he expects 2023 at earliest. We'll see though some of these guys might be able to move through the system quickly (but for planning purposes I don't think that can be counted on).

Moving through "the system," as in- paying them sooner rather than later?

I'm betting against that.

Congrats - You are the first one to kick the can down the road to 2023. Other have only kicked it down the road to 2021 or 2022. Now, can we get someone out there to kick the can to 2025?

Exactly, maybe Cherington knows how to negotiate, something some on here have no idea. We'll have to wait and see how good a negotiater he is.

100% agree with this. We aren't going to be good team in 2021 either way. It's obvious if trades happen with Bell, Frazier, Musgrove or whoever, prospects are coming back, not MLB players. We aren't signing anything good in the offseason, so ...
