I have the 79 world series boxed set on DVD. I decided to watch the 4 Pirate wins. What I found very surprising was the difference in the way they stood at the plate then vs now. Nearly everyone was way off the plate, had a closed stance, and stood in a kind-of crouch. Now days you see guys almost on top of the plate with a stance that is way open, and they are very vertical. That had me curious as to when it changed, and whether the modern approach is better or just different.

I have that set too. Interesting what you noticed. For me what stood out was the emphasis on how the bullpens were being used, fewer CG by starters, platooning and pointing out the length of games. Except for how today's game is 3 true outcome, it was obvious that the way the game is played now was evident back then. Even though the DH wasn't used in the series you could see the impact it had on the game and the way AL and NL teams were constructed. Tanner and his bullpen game would not look out of place today.

I also noticed that Umpires were still either national league or american league. I know that changed and they are all just MLB umpires now, but I can't remember when.
