I agree with you. Cherington has acquired some veteran players this offseason, as well as some younger players with the 3 major trades.

if he can repeat his 2018 season he will make a great contribution to the team.

Looks like BC is trying to make the team better, maybe he doesn't care about getting number 1 pick in 2022.

For what it is worth, I am not going to criticize BC for any moves he has made since his hiring in November 2019. He has a plan to get the Pirates to be a competitive team again. I know the owner is tight fisted with money, but I want to see how things happen whenever the Pirates need a player or two to advance to the post season.

That could be but it's still prudent to think this move is hoping Cahill has a good four months in order to trade him at the Deadline. It seems to me that BC's plan is to build a winning roster for the 2023-2026 period of time.

(There is where Shedman comes in to say the can's now been kicked down the road so far that it's beyond the dirt path, through the weeds, and into a fallen tree that's too rotted for even a raccoon's home. Or something.)

I don't think Cahill has much to offer on the mound. There's a reason he was still available half way thru ST. It's been 11 years since he was 18-8 with a 2.97 ERA in 2010. Since then he's been 57-73 with a 4.35 ERA. But I still think it was good to bring in another veteran to help the young pitchers.

Tyler Anderson doesn't have much of a track record either. He was being counted on as the veteran of the group but he never experienced anything remotely close to Cahill's successful 2010 season. I don't expect much from either of them when they pitch but after reading that the Pirates were counting on Keller to provide leadership to the pitchers, it's encouraging that the FO finally realized that having some experience to impart on the inexperienced pitchers might be a better idea than asking the still inexperienced Keller to be a leader.

I see articles back to 2014 where they were trying to acquire him.

Maybe he's just noticed our head-to-head vs. the Orioles this spring. :D

I'll welcome any decent major leaguer to the Pirates, but I wonder what it means to the 40-man roster.

Normally it's not difficult to find a fungible righty reliever or two to DFA, but the solid Spring Training bullpen work suggests that we will lose someone worth a MLB spot. I can only hope that we can attract some trade partners in the next week or so!
