Truthfully, I'm not surprised Tucker was sent down. He's a really likeable kid but he hasn't shown much to this point, so much so that he didn't even play his natural position last season when 2020 was a throw away year. For management to not consider him an alternative to Gonzalez and a struggling Newman was a big failure. He's more and more looking like another poor first round pick by Huntington.

Several things worked against Tucker. He missed some of ST with an injury. He has an option, which Gonzalez does not. And first and foremost, he did nothing to earn a spot. If he's going to have a career in MLB, he'll have to find a level of hitting that he has not yet demonstrated.

All of those are legitimate reasons but the one about doing "nothing to earn a spot" is the most important. He's already 24 and hasn't had a season's-worth of at bats yet, mostly because he hasn't deserved to get more.

And when he had a lot of ABs in the minors he was no better than a .260 hitter at the AA and AAA levels.

If he could hit .260 here and play above average defense, then I'd be okay with that, but only as long as he has others in the line-up who can make up for his offensive negatives. But unless BC is a master at drafting, and his people are the same at developing, that won't happen.

I would take a .260 average from Tucker, but it appears from his time in the Majors he needs additional time to develop his hitting skills.

He's 24 and hasn't advanced his skills. How much more time is he to be given in the minor leagues to learn how to be a big league hitter? I don't know that answer but, if I'm running out of patience, what must the Pirates management be thinking? Tucker had a great opportunity with the weirdness of last season to do what was necessary to win the SS job. He didn't. Will he ever be serious enough about his career to try again?

I know it's only Spring training, but Newman is a ridiculous 16-22 for a 727 avg.

Fortunately, Tucker is no longer the SS of the future for the Bucs. We have a lot of talent coming up in the next couple of years that can replace a departed Newman.
