Didn't see a thread on this, so I'll throw this up there. Anybody else upset by this? I mean, it has no impact on me personally, A) because I won't be at PNC this year, and B) because I pay for just about everything with plastic anyway. But it still rubs me the wrong way.

As with all things COVID, I'm very concerned about the precedent being set here. We've already established that anything that used to pre-2020 be known as "normal" is fair game to get chucked out the window in the name of public health. We also know that this will probably not be rolled back.

So, how far fetched is this scenario five years from now?

You go to a game at PNC and head over to Manny's. You order two beers, a soda, three burgers, and some fries. You're forced to pay with plastic, and as soon as you sit down with your kids, your phone vibrates.

You look, and you see a text that says this, "This is a calorie reminder from your friends at Blue Cross/Blue Shield. We noticed that you bought two Coors Lights, a Pepsi, three hamburgers and three orders of fries from Manny's Bar-B-Que. We just want to take this opportunity to remind you that your dietary choices affect us all. We're all in this together! Unhealthy eating habits lead to crowded hospitals, higher medical costs, and higher insurance premiums. Next time you're at the ballpark, please consider healthier food options! Thanks for choosing Welmark!"

This this is far-fetched? If I'd told you two years ago that you'd be well into your second year of being told by Uncle Sam to isolate away from family and to wear a mask everywhere you went, you'd have thought I was crazy.

I for one don't want to live in such a future world.

Times are changing my friend. You can go to the grocery store of Kmart or Walmart and pay with Google Pay, Apple Pay, and several other types of electronic payment systems that simply use the NFC feature of the modern smartphone. It's been over two years since my kid was in town for a Pirates series. When she bought us food she used her debit or credit card without thinking.

Before I got I want to be sure that you weigh yourself before you get your COVID shot and then after getting the shot. The microscopic weight gain will mean that you got the vaccine with Bill Gates' microchip in it. ;D

If never being able to pay in cash at Pirate games is what is necessary to keep COVID down so be it. That's a small price to pay for good health.

Are you sure you aren't just feeling irritable because you live in the only place in America where you are officially in the home market (and therefore excluded) from any NL central team on MLB?

Well, this is part of it.

I've got no problem paying with plastic. I pay for almost everything with my credit/debit card. I've got a major problem being told that cash may not be used. I don't like where this leads. At all. Particularly since the CDC said the other day that the odds of catching COVID from surface contact (e.g. handling money) is about 1 in 10,000.

And personally, I think the COVID response has been the single greatest overreaction in human history, but what do I know...

This is the argument for literally every single restriction on freedom. The big mass of freedom we've inherited always looks the same, you just trim it around the edges a little. The security gained is always tangible, the freedom lost is always hypothetical. Unless you approach questions by starting with, "MUST this freedom be restricted," then freedom will lose every single time.

my local minor league team is doing the same. However its ballpark will be at full capacity all season. I plan on going at least once, it is a new ballpark that was supposed to open last year.

I thought this was something about the stadium being broke.

I pay for every damn thing with plastic because it's easier but it's true that every damn thing I buy (and where and when I buy it) is traceable. In some places in Europe (at least in Germany) cash is still used everywhere for privacy reasons. We might miss cash when it's gone.

To tell the truth I didn't know it was possible to turn down cash since it is legal tender.

A reverse ATM will be available, which allows fans to convert cash into a pre-paid Mastercard, and using credit and debit cards, as well as Apple or Google Pay is recommended.
