I noticed that Castro is beginning to play some second base at Altoona. He was playing more games at third base, but now I am wondering if he is being groomed to play second if and when Frazier is moved. He is on the 40 man roster, and he is hitting around.300 at AA. Tucker would probably be the choice if Frazier is traded, but then Castro would get promoted to Indy. The middle infield of Castro and Cruz are hitting very well at Altoona.

interesting about Castro.

I looked up his minor league fielding stats and he has only played 55 games at third compared to 116 at short and 182 at second.

52 of the games at short were in the Dominican Republic.

He has had a good minor league bat with some pop.

Just a guess, but I could see the Bucs moving Castro to Indy in July, and if he plays well he could be a September call up. If that happens he would probably have a shot at opening the 2022 season at second base.

I hope that happens. I think he has started off well each time he has advanced and then slumped but if continues hitting for another month there isn't anything to lose by sending him to Indy.

I thought that Nick Gonzalez was to be the future 2Bman. In light of that, if Castro has a lot of experience playing SS, I wonder why he isn't spending more time there?

You are probably correct, that Gonzales is the future second basemen. They will need a stop gap between the time they move Frazier, and when Gonzales arrives. When the minor league season began I thought that Gonzales might make the jump to AA at mid season, but since he is now on the IL he may end up playing the entire year at High A. His current injury may delay his MLB debut until mid 2023 season.

I see your point but, if Castro proves he can be an above average shortstop, I’d rather have him developing there and use Newman to play 2B until Gonzales arrives. SS is a far more important position and I’d rather have that settled if possible.
