Rays RHP prospect Shane Baz fired five scoreless innings on Sunday for Triple-A Durham with 10 strikeouts.

Baz was solid in his first two starts for the Bulls while allowing two runs over nine innings, but this was another level. The right-hander didn't walk anyone, and he now has an unrealistic K/BB ratio of 69.5 on the 2021 season. The former Pittsburgh prospect has been outstanding all year, and now looks like he's very close to being a member of the Tampa Bay rotation. With two elite pitches in his fastball and slider and another couple that keep hitters honest, Baz will absolutely be worth a fantasy add when that takes place.

The only "positive" thing to take from that trade is that it was so bad that it made it obvious that the whole thing needed to be blown up.

But even that might be stretching it a bit.

Well at least this is the last piece of that nightmare of a trade that can only haunt us for only 10 or more so years.

Best PTBNL "throw-in" ever?

Most PTBNL are afterthoughts.

Only the Pirates toss in elite high-end talents who throw 100 mph

I'm a 72 year old non genius . When I first saw this trade , it didn't include Baz. I was in disbelief that a non contending team would make such a ridiculous deal. I asked those on this board that supported the trade for wagers that Glasnow would out perform Archer by the following year's end. I about went insane when I saw the player to be named later was Baz. Why would I know this was ridiculous while pirate brass obviously didn't ? I've always contended that they did this to try to bring the dwindling fan base back to the stands.

Below is a link to illustrate Archers losing record and unimpressive whip and era the the Pirates traded for him.

These guys agree with the Pirates Brain(less) trust - totally unrealistic! The Pirates sure pulled a fast one on the Rays!!

Baseball America did a similar review of Baz.

It really makes me ill.

It seems MLB is uniquely painful when a mistake is made of the magnitude of a Pirate Mistake.

As the stats show, the Pirates were not trading for the effective Archer of 2013-2015. He had struggled in 2016 and 2017 and was in the midst of his worst career season in 2018 when the trade was made!

Meadows had been very good for the Pirates earlier in the season and looked like a true #1 draft pick talent. He would have been more than enough for a struggling veteran pitcher who was once very good but had been mediocre for the past 2.5 years. Glasnow had been a bust (apparently due to how the Pirates were instructing him to pitch). He seemed like a throw in just in case Archer bounced back to his form of 3 years ago and Meadows didn't live up to expectations.

So the Rays were getting a bonus in Glasnow if he could tap into his potential. That seemed a little excessive for the Pirates because there was no reason to believe Archer would exceed expectations and Meadows would disappoint. But then the inclusion of Baz was a stunner. It looked like the deal was already lopsided in Tampa's favor before Baz was included as a PTBNL.

There was no baseball sense to this deal for the Pirates. It reminded me of Huntington's first trade disaster when he dealt Jason Bay for a bag of baseballs. At that time he was a new GM and the Pirates were small time players in MLB trade talks. MLB elites LA and Boston were talking about a headlining Manny Ramirez deal. Bay was the Pirates top trading chip and he had 1 more year of control before reaching free agency. So Huntington got into trade talks with the big boys as LA got Ramirez, Boston got Bay and all the Pirates got were a pair of unremarkable prospects from each of the other two teams. But Huntington must have felt like a real GM trading with the big boys.

In 2018 Huntington and the Pirates were known for trading veterans for prospects and their fans were frustrated after the 3 year run of 2013-15 fizzled out. Tampa was shopping the well know, formerly good, currently declining Archer. It looked like Huntington again wanted to be one of the big boy GMs and acquire a "name" player in a trade. So he ensured Archer would go to the Pirates by making an unbelievably one sided deal that Tampa could not refuse. It doesn't appear to have been a trade to improve the on field product of the Pirates. It looks like a trade that was made entirely so Huntington could boast about acquiring a well known veteran pitcher via a trade instead of the usual deal for prospects.
