Per the PG:

"Reynolds was not in the Pirates’ starting lineup Thursday, with Shelton saying that it was a scheduled day off, since he wouldn’t get as much off time now that he will be playing in the All-Star game. Shelton added that Frazier would also get a day off this weekend for the same reason."

This is insane. The Pirates did not play yesterday. After Sunday they don't play again until Friday. During that time Frazier and Reynolds will at most play half of a game on Tuesday before having Wednesday and Thursday off. Shelton feels that those few innings in the middle of nearly a week off requires that both Frazier and Reynolds get a scheduled day off in the Mets series. Shelton's bizarre obsession with resting his players is beyond comprehension.

I'm wondering if any of these players ever balk at being given a day off?

I think we might be underestimating the burn-out factor of the long season. Most players look forward to the ASB to unwind, I imagine.

What's really inexcusable about resting Frazier is that he's not going to be Pirate in a few weeks. Who cares if he's rested or not? And Reynolds is in his mid-20s playing baseball for a few hours each day, not storming Omaha Beach and then fighting his way through France.

I don't understand the need for the days off either.

If players are getting tired why not let them skip batting practice now and then or report to the park later than usual?

Why does rest have to be a game off?
