Not those ones, the OTHER ones. The roller derby team, that apparently, the team soon (?) to be formerly known as the Indians, did not do their due diligence in vetting the name, and all that intellectual properties legal beagle stuff.

The amateur derby team has the domain name clevelandguardians.com   I mean, I'm no lawyer, but in this day and age, that would be the first thing I'd look up, seeing as that would be the first go to domain name. Business ALWAYS want their business to attach directly to a website. Except Dicks Sporting Goods. Another business that didn't think things through.

We know how this will play out. The Indians will simply try and financially crush the amateurs and steal the goods, unless those who are about fair play and truth and the American Way, fight back and in the end, the American Way will prevail.

Meaning, the Indians will be enriching some heretofore unknown outside a small circle sporting franchise to give up the domain, and come to agreement on marketing arrangements so as the two are never confused with each other, or affiliated with each other. Unless they want to do a marketing thing together.

Go Guardians!  Not those ones, the other ones.

I’m on the side of the American Way. I hope the original Guardians stand firm and never cave, forcing the Indians to choose another name. America will be a better place for it.

This is how threads are derailed. There was already another thread for those types of comments.

This has nothing to do with whether you like the name change, it being oh so important to you. This is about a legal fight that is about to start, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Will the Indians just simply make it to expensive in legal fees to fight the trademark?

Thanks for your input in advancing the discussion

Citizen's National Bank chartered by PA in 1893 and by the Feds in 1907 lost its name battle with Citizen's Bank of PA and is now NexTier. I don't know if it received any kind of payout for the change but at the time it didn't want to change.

I usually root for the little guy in these disputes. My softball team used to go to a bar called Fridays. Was around for over 25 years and then TGI Friday's decided to complain.

The Friday's my team went to decided to change its name to Thursdays.

Could be a windfall for the roller derby team. I'm sure they'd be fine with that.

Let’s hope the roller derby team refuses; principles ahead of money!

That would save major-league baseball from an awful name. Guardian!? That would be the worst name in any professional sports. Instead we should hold a contest for the best name for the Cleveland baseball team.

My suggestions:

Cleveland Mudlarks (named in honor of the great Gil Thorpe and Milford high school)

Cleveland Catfish (got the right ring, got the right status)

Cleveland Fire (its got, well you get it right?)

I vote for: Cleveland Catfish

I wanted Spiders, but let's think about this for "worst team name." Just because a team name is old and we're used to it doesn't make it good.

There's a team called "Metropolitans."  There is a "Dodgers."

There's a team with the most generic sports name of all time, the "Athletics."

There are not one but two teams named in honor of socks--three if you buy the 50s "Cincinnati Redlegs" stuff.

In other sports, let's not forget the Utah Jazz.  Or the hockey team that translates in English to "Habitants of Canada."

:)
