Upcoming Roster Dilemma . . .

The Bucs currently have the following players on the 10-day IL:

Howard, Underwood, Gonzalez, Moran, Pooplanco, and Tom.

The big question is who goes down when these guys are activated?

To start I DFA Pooplanco, the team is going to lose with him or without him. It's time to cut bait no matter the cost. Swim the rest of the season with Difo.

Tom needs to be offered back to the A's. If they don't want him back and no other team wants him then just release him.

Moran needs to be added if nothing more than a platoon with NoGo.

Gonzalez is another one that I DFA. He has been a big bust for the Bucs and they can give Castro a good look for the rest of the season.

Oliva can go away as well. He can't hit his way out of a paper bag.

Among the pitchers, Kyle Keller and maybe Nick Mears can be optioned.

What do you guys think about the dilemma?

Difo, Gamel, and Nogowski have earned their playing time. Reynolds, Frazier, Stallings, and Hayes are fixtures as starters.

They can release/trade/offer back/option/shoot really doesn't matter to me the following: Newman/Tom/Polanco/Gonzalez/Perez/Oliva/Evans.

But Perez is the backup catcher, so he's sticking. Honestly, I go with Difo at short, Frazier in LF, Gamel in RF, Castro starts at second and with Reynolds, Stallings, Nogowski and Hayes, you have the best lineup possible.

Perez, Evans, Moran and pull a name out of the hat that hits right handed that you don't worry about never getting much playing time. I guess that would be Newman.

Evans can get the occasional start over Gamel, Newman over Difo, Moran over Nogowski, and of course Perez over Stallings. You can shuffle pieces around similarly to give Reynolds, Hayes, and Frazier that oh so precious rest.

Oliva, Tom, Polanco, Gonzalez should never see any more time on the major league roster.

Polanco obviously has to go- Agree on Oliva, Tom and Gonzalez. Underwood should go. Others would depend on who is traded

Good assessment, Surge. Hard to disagree with any of it. What it shows is that the roster is filled with guys who are only here because the team needs 26 guys. If they’re not gone at the end of the month or after the season, they certainly won’t be here when the team begins to compete.

More than the others, I want Polanco gone. He’s not the only one left over from the Huntington days but he’s the one who best represents the failures since 2015. Releasing him moves the organization further away from that misery.

Unfortunately, the specter of Polanco will still hang over the Pirates into 2022 as he will be receiving a 3 million dollar buyout. Assuming Frazier gets traded, and not knowing the value of what some of the Arb 2 and 3 guys will be receiving, Gregory Polanco will be the highest paid player on the Pirates until arbitration figures are exchanged.

I would go with:

1B - Nogowski

2B- Frazier

SS - Difo/Castro

3B - Hayes

RF - Polanco

CF - Reynolds

LF - Gamel

And then see if the GM's of Arizona or Baltimore would give me Zac Gallen or John Means for a treasure trove of our suspects.

Even though he'll be paid that $3 million, the benefit is that he won't be on the field any longer. To me, that outweighs the money, which he's due anyway. I know the $3 million is a lot when considering how much he'll be paid relative to others, but it's not like he'll be keeping money from someone else. I doubt they'll be looking to increase the payroll next year by any significant amount. Pay him his money and wish him a happy life.

This is how they repay those fans who are still hanging in with the team?

The Bucs do have some short term roster decisions to make over the next few weeks, but I have been thinking about the 40 man roster which they set in mid November. There are several prospects who need to be added to the 40 man roster in order to protect from the Rule 5 draft. There could be as many as 8 to 10 players added in November. I have made a list of players who are now on the roster, or the IL who I think they would protect.

Bedner

Brault

Brubaker

Cederlind

Contreares

Crowe

Davis

Holmes

Howard

M. Keller

Kranick

Kuhl

Mears

Oviedo

Stratton

Yajure

Stallings

Castro

Cruz

Hayes

Moran

Newman

Nogowski

Difo

Reynolds

Gemel

Oliva

That is 26 players to protect which gives them room to add several young prospects. I did not include Tucker who I think is on a short leach with Pittsburgh, nor did I add Soriano the young rule 5 pick who had his second TJ operation. Besides adding some prospects to the roster they may have room for a couple mid range free agent pitchers, or a backup catcher.
