I use to despise these guys.  But I have nothing but respect for them now.

Earlier this season during a Brewers game at PNC I asked a Brewers fan how the organization has managed its success?

He gave a one word answer: “Attanasio”.

Not the GM, not Counsell, not any of the players that lived up to their significant potential.  The owner.  We talked for a bit about his answer; what a contrast with the Pirates.

The Brewers were public enemy #1 with me because of Braun. I went to Milwaukee for a game back in 2012 I believe it was. The fans were so awesome, the tailgaters invited us each and everyone to join them. The Brewers customer service was top notch. Their fans were so interested in us, and made me feel like family.

So I can't hate them. Really admire the franchise, the fans, and their team is class.

And if they win the World Series, they win me $400.

Could never hate them again.

If you ask a Pirate fan what he likes about the owner, he'll say, "Nutting."

When Neil Huntington was first building the team, his approach was to draft pitchers on the theory you can't get really good pitchers any other way. Milwaukee's approach was to go for hitters, on theory that good hitters weren't available easily elsewhere. My thought at that time was that the hitters made for more exciting games, which meant more attendance, which meant more money for free agents. I think the Milwaukee approach has worked better (for whatever reason) than the Pirate approach.

They hired Neil's old college coach as a mechanics guru:

One of his former players, Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington, already has him involved the evaluation of pitchers before the June draft of college and high school talent. Thurston, widely recognized as a master of pitching mechanics, will analyze videos of prospective Pittsburgh draftees.

One month later, they had the Sanchez draft, where they used the money saved to load up on high school pitchers. I don't think you can overstate how big of a mistake this may have been.

In hindsight….I agree with both of you.

Things change but I can’t see myself ever rooting for the Brewers. I can’t erase the stain of Ryan Braun. I know that’s irrational, but being a fan is oftentimes irrational.
