Looking at the mangers already in the HOF, there's Al Lopez and Leo Durocher who are in that Murtaugh has a better record as far as number of WS game wins, but I think those two also had a much higher profile career as manager. Lopez never had a team with a losing record from what I read doing some research. Bill McKechnie also has 8 wins and is in as a manager.

Murtaugh had 8 WS games wins. There are only 19 managers in the history of the game with more. 16 of them are in the HOF as managers, one is in the HOF as a player (Frank Chance), Terry Francona is still managing, and Bruce Bochy just retired in 2019.

There are 23 managers all told in the HOF. Rube Foster, Ned Hanlon, and Frank Selee are in the HOF. Rube Foster was in the Negro Leagues, and Hanlon and Selee were from the pre-World Series era.

Murtaugh is in good company on the 8 win bubble-Cito Gaston, Tom Kelly, and Ralph Houk. Bill Carrigan won 2 WS as a player-manager. The aforementioned McKechnie is in, and Dave Roberts is still managing. Gaston and Houk won back to back titles, and Houk had 2 100 win seasons.

If he deserves to be in, it should be after a couple of those other guys get in then. I think they all have the credentials, and I think 8 wins as a manager in the WS should be the equivalent of 3,000 hits. 26 managers have 8 or more WS wins, 32 players have 3,000 or more hits.

There should also be some sort of wins threshold as a manager that I think should make one a HOF manager, there's always that leader that for whatever reason, wins and wins and wins but somehow never gets the championship.

For years, I was on the fence with how I felt about Murtaugh's credentials for the HOF.

My memory is sketchy, so I could be wrong on some of this, but I think it was Surg a few years ago on our former board who was able to sway me by bringing up some other impressive Murtaugh credential. I can't remember whether it pertained to the 1960 WS or the 1971. It may have had something to do with a number of his managerial decisions that helped the team win as generally considered underdogs. Surg, do I have any of this right?

I'm no longer on that fence. I say he deserves to be enshrined.
