The GM’s get together later this week for their annual meetings. The meetings often times lay the groundwork for future trades. Since the Pirates have some roster decisions to make in a couple weeks, they could make a trade or two to clear roster space, or they could trade a minor league player instead of adding him to the roster.

I prefer the not make a trade to make a trade if there is no purpose behind it. Nothing substantial will be coming in that helps and that is all I care about. These types of trades that we will see yield nothing.

That might not be an issue this year. First of all, when we say the Pirates will add FAs, we mean the leftover FAs no one else wanted. We're not talking about impact players. And since they will want to protect as many prospects on the 40 as possible, it would be counterproductive to add a dumpster dive at the cost of losing a prospect in rule 5. It appears the reason they outrighted a useful player like Difo--who is the type of FA they sign--is because they can fill that role with Tucker or Castro or Marcano or someone who might otherwise be in AAA if not on the Bucs' bench. We might see Cal Mitchell or Mason Martin on the bench instead of signing a fringe FA. They may compile a pitching staff out of what's already on the 40. The 2022 team will again go nowhere but if BC knows what he's doing they should be getting closer to being legitimately competitive with players coming out of the farm system. They won't want to take a chance on losing some of them just for the sake of adding a fringe FA that no one else wanted to a team that will flounder all season. Ideally, the 2023 team could compete and that's what they may be aiming for rather than adding a Difo or an Anderson to the 2022 team.

Well, actually i realized they signed two players, so they are actually over the roster limit. They do not currently have space to sign any players, including a Difo or an Anderson. There Domestic Reserve roster is full, plus one.

If he can improve the ML roster as he has the minor league system, 2022 may not be as gloomy as it looks at this point.

This is where I lose some of my patience. It's not just with Cherington. Huntington said the same thing- talking about the 40-man roster.



I want him talking about the 25, 26, whatever it is.



Regardless, I have every reason to believe that he's able to improve upon the MLB roster. After all, we lost 101 games.



The issue to me isn't improving positions. That should be easy enough. It's whether he's able to improve it enough so as to exceed the improvements that the Brewers, Cards, Reds, and Cubs plan to make?
