Interesting that they’ll now play 162 games when just 24 hours ago that wasn’t a possibility. I hope this contract turns out to be a disaster for both sides.

Very disappointing from the threat/hope at the beginning of the lockout: that the players would create some sort of competitive balance (payroll floor). I can’t tell the players gif anything except a small raise for the pre-arb players. I guess the DH creates 15 new positions to fill.

The only players who care about non-competitive owners are the players on those teams.  And, if they care so much about them, they don't play for them for very long.

Unless, of course, they get paid a lot to stay. Or, if no competitive team wants them.

Not to be corrective, but the DH in the NL will create as many as 14 new positions. To be sure, the Pirates will never hire a legit DH. They’ll just use their fourth outfielder or platoon 1Bman in the role.

You’re right. Make that 14. Bob Nutting may be cheap but he’s a pret-ty smart guy…..

I'm not sure what the DH is creating.  There are still 25, 26 guys on a team.  So, if a team has a guy who's a dedicated, full-time DH, it means that they would have to subtract a guy from some other position.

Yes, roster-wised, the DH creates nothing additional. It's value to the players union is that it usually replaces a lower paid reserve player (NL) with a higher paid starter (AL). For decades, the AL has had 9 non-pitchers who could be paid as starters compared to 8 in the NL. The union is all about driving up salaries and the DH helps accomplish that.

True, but from what I've heard, pitchers don't come cheap, either.

Well, many pitchers, anyway.

Just glad to have baseball to look forward to. Some baseball, that is. Then again, bad baseball's better than no baseball at all.

You may need to remind me of that every once in a while. ;)
