Dutton wrote: Sun Mar 23, 2025 3:45 pm I really liked Adam Frazier when he played for the Bucs a few years back. But I really hated it when he was signed to a MLB contract that basically guaranteed him a 26-man spot and likewise guaranteed that one our many young infield prospects would be denied an important opportunity to develop at the MLB level.

We've now seen Nick Yorke sent down to a crowded Indianapolis infield. If you don't look too hard at Yorke's ST statistics, you might think it's a wise decision. But Yorke has hit the ball hard this Spring and his versatility would be Frazier's equal. Yorke could have been part of a LF platoon.

The Tommy Pham overpay is, at least, easier to understand, given that few suspected that Suwinski and Bae would knock the MLB door down this Spring. And there is the L/R platoon that seems obvious. But there is one other decision that shows a lack of forward thinking: the failure to give Bart, Davis and Rodriguez a thorough opportunity to learn 1B.

We seem to have an "embarrassment of riches" at catcher, where a solid MLB backup like Jason Delay can do no better than a share of AAA playing time. But in a smarter ST, Bart, Davis and Rodriguez would have all auditioned for a 1B platoon. And that might have allowed all 3 to start the season on the 26-man. Cutch as DH removes a possibility.

A few comments on the pitching staff:
Heaney's awful ST has me worried, but Jared Jones' sore elbow has me depressed. Assuming Jones can't answer the bell, adding Harrington to the MLB staff is a popular rumor, but I think it would be short-sighted to create a 40-man cut when you have Burrows and Ashcraft available.

Who do you want to cut? I suppose Shugart is expendable, but I'd rather keep a spot available for a tasty final cut from another team, or Tyler Rainey, who seems to have bounced back this Spring. And we should make room for Borucki.

We have an "abundance of mediocrity" in the bullpen. As much as I like Nicolas' stuff, he has 2 options left. Stratton' has 3. Bednar Holderman, Santana, and Lawrence are righties who should make it. And Mlodzinski, despite having 2 options left, might be a short term option as a starter. There's room for 3 lefties at most. Ferguson and Mayza have contracts that pretty much insure their spots. Could Joey Wentz be traded? If it comes down to Wentz vs Borucki, I'll take the latter. So that means that I'd option Nicolas and Stratton to AAA. Lord knows we'll see them when the inevitable pitching injuries occur.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
I’d like to see both Frazier and Pham released now. Of course, the Pirates would never release guys who they’ll have to pay major league contracts to, so that won’t happen.

I’d also make a decision about MCutchen by May 15. If he’s not contributing, then it’s time to convince him to retire or pretend he has a season-ending injury. I wouldn’t embarrass him by releasing him but, if he has little to offer this year, it’d be a really poor decision to continue to play him at the expense of a younger player who needs the at bats.

Jordan Montgomery to get TJ. Another cautionary tale of big free agent spending:

Angels release former number one overall pick from 2016.

I wonder what you consider a "bust" for a former overall number one. Considering it's not an exact science, I think any guy who is able to cobble out a MLB career for over 5 years isn't a bust, he just did not live up to reputation that spot brings. Would you consider Tim Foli, Jeff King, Luke Hochevar, players with a solid if not overwhelming career, busts? Certainly Bullington was a bust. Brien Taylor was a bust. Was Ron Blomberg (first DH in MLB history) a bust? Tim Almon? Shawn Abner was clearly a bust, but was Shawon Dunston?

Pirates overall number ones BTW:
1986 Jeff King
1996 Kris Benson
2002 Bryan Bullington
2011 Gerrit Cole
2021 Henry Davis
2023 Paul Skenes

It's interesting the Astros had the number one overall three years in a row, and have gone on to be quite the juggernaut in MLB, yet only one of those players contributed to any of their success, Carlos Correa. The other two were complete busts: Mark Appel-who never played a game for the Astros; and Brady Aiken, who never even made it to MLB.

I consider a #1 overall player a bust if he was never a significant factor for a team. From your Pirates list, only Bullington was a bust. Davis remains to be seen. Foli and Dunston had long careers and were key parts of their teams. Blomberg had a few good years in a reserve role. I'm sure they expected more production from him but he hit .293 for his career. Bill Almon was no better than average but contributed over a 15-year career. I'd say Hochevar was a bust. In a 9-year career, he managed to have 1 good year as a reliever after failing badly as a starter.

Bullington was a victim of an idiot GM. David Littlefield picked him #1 overall, saying Bullington could be a middle of the rotation starter. Other players picked in that same 1st round included B.J. Upton, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis, Scott Kazmir, Nick Swisher, Cole Hamels, Jeremy Guthrie, Matt Cain, Joe Blanton and Jeff Francoeur. But Littlefield wanted his middle of the rotation guy.
Don't be disgruntled. Be gruntled.

I agree that Burlington was a bust but, to be fair, he didn’t have the talent to be a #1 pick. But still, he didn’t succeed in any way in the major leagues. Davis has a chance to also be a bust if he doesn’t either get the chance to play or he’s simply reached his peak already. But the guy on that list who I came to despise was Kris Benson. He had the talent but rarely took advantage of it.

Here's an article that's interesting on several fronts - https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/pi ... 3b7f&ei=37

First, our starting lineup is ranked 28th in baseball. How can they be that bad in year 5 of a rebuild? And equally, there are two teams even worse of than we are???
