It is not an inside joke. If Cherington does not acquire a player, Doc will say it is good. If Cherington dumps a player, Doc will say it is good. If Cherington acquires a player, Doc will say it is good. If Cherington does absolutely nothing the entire off season, Doc will say it is good. According to Doc, Cherington can do no wrong.

It is not an inside joke. If Cherington does not acquire a player, Doc will say it is good. If Cherington dumps a player, Doc will say it is good. Let's see: Cherington does nothing, the result being no improvement. On the other hand, that inaction hasn't made the team worse. Sabean signs five guys who collectively make the Giants worse than a year ago. Yet Cherington's the bad GM? Are you absolutely sure you're a Pirates fan?
